Minority/Woman Business Enterprise in MD and VA

EEI is certified by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) in the states of Maryland and Virginia. EEI has met the WBENC certification criteria. This provides an important marketing tool as well as expanded visibility for EEI, and training and resources for the company in both the public and private sectors.

In Virginia, the benefits of certification are help and support for minority businesses to compete for State contracts with larger and more favored businesses. Although there are no automatic set-asides, it confers a preferred status on otherwise equal bids. State Agencies are required to obtain and consider quotes from small, women, and minority businesses before they award contracts. However, Agencies will always award contracts to the lowest responsible bidder.

In Maryland, certification as a MBE provides greater exposure for work opportunities on State projects. The names of all certified MBEs appear in the MBE Directory, a reference manual which is widely disseminated to each MDOT administration, other state departments, local governments, contractors and to the public. Contractors use the MBE Directory as a basic resource for soliciting minority participation on projects. If a firm is not certified, a contractor cannot receive credit toward achievement of the MBE participation goal by using that firm.
